Hal kept walking.  When their mother was alive, she and Victoria used to play poker three or four nights a week. " Bess asked.  Usually by now he would have turned on the television or stereo or both.  She looked down at her empty hand.  Each time she passed the recruiting office she straightened her shoulders.  Until that year, Hal had been a constant close presence, almost a twin, but he'd gone ahead of Bess to middle school. " Bess asked, as they climbed the little hill. " The Omni rattled over the tracks.

Hal slapped his leg and laughed, and Bess felt the last scraps of her anger dissolve into the background of sirens.  Wherever her mother was, she'd want to think of Bess and Hal playing poker with Victoria, the three of them sitting together enjoying each other's company, telling funny stories.  Nobody argued. When she returned from the house, Bess was relieved to hear Hal and Victoria fighting in their usual manner about Hal's taking more responsibility. "I'm not paying rent in my own house," said Hal.

Hamlet bled in the woods near the river for days, licking himself and dragging the halfattached leg from place to place.  He licked his stump night and day, licked the busted bone and wound in a constant rhythm, never sleeping, working as though his infection produced an addictive liquor.  Cushioned from the cold concrete by only a wafer of carpeting and whatever blankets or clothing fails to the floor, Hamlet remains alert long after people and other dogs are insensible.  He watches her gray head fall quiet against the couch arm with her mouth hanging open.
