More simply, it reflects on several years’ experience working with a wide variety of women’s, feminist and other organizations – some national, others regional and international, and all in the nonprofit sector with a commitment to human rights and social justice. We wish to do no more than share personal experiences, perceptions and analyses. This essay draws the reader’s attention to some of the pressing issues that challenge feminist organizations. Although it discusses some of the broader socio-political developments that define the external environment, the focus is on challenges posed from within.

I sought to connect better with the cool women I had met; it was only later that I began to understand that the safe spaces facilitated by NNPCW were the outcome of intentional work toward inclusiveness and conscious decisions to level power dynamics. During my tenure on the coordinating committee, I served as co-moderator of the network for a one-year term, facilitating meetings with another woman as we overlapped in a fluid model of shared leadership. My experience with NNPCW taught me ways to facilitate consensus-model decision making, encourage mutual invitation in meetings, and model mutuality within a patriarchal corporate hierarchy.

The ability to block means that no one person can be coerced into supporting a decision that contradicts her conscience. Her voice will be heard and honoured by the process. The result of a consensus block is a majority vote, as in the parliamentary process. Yet the group must officially acknowledge that they did not reach consensus, and that not everyone supported the decision. In the coordinating committee’s experience, even blocked consensus helps build a communal ethic that recognizes the marginalized.
