Thus after 1948 a constant struggle was waged against alleged forces of subversion in politics, culture, and society that culminated in July 1949 when the Holy Office of the Vatican announced the formal excommunication of all Communist parties and supporters of such parties on account of their atheistic and materialist ideology.
